Wendy Matthews

Wendy started her working career managing a craft co-operative and community centre in the Vhembe District in the mid 1980’s employed by Wilgespruit Fellowship Centre as a fieldworker for the “Self Help Association for Development Economics”. She participated in the initiation of a National Craft Association as a marketing association for craft groups throughout the country.

In 1990, Wendy started serving articles at Douglas & Velcich Chartered Accountants, an audit firm specializing in Trade Unions and NGO financial support. She continued to work as an Audit Manager and Financial Systems consultant until 1999, when she joined the Urban Sector Network, where she had set up the financial reporting systems from inception, as Financial Manager.

Wendy joined the Mvula Trust as Financial Director in 2002 after a decision had been made to bring the finance function back in-house. She was responsible for developing a financial department, systems, policies and procedures to address the financial function of the organization.

Wendy has a B.A in Sociology from Wits, a B.Compt Hons from UNISA and is currently studying an MBA through MANCOSA. She is registered as an AGA with the South African Institute for Chartered Accountants.

Wendy is committed to working within a context wherein the discipline of financial accountability can add value in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and transparency within a development context.
